Physical Education Expectations and Grading System

The Dallastown High School physical education staff is committed to educating your son/daughter.  This includes developing an understanding of their current fitness level, (which will occur primarily during the second marking period), and together, build strategies to maintain or improve that level.  As we do this, our program stresses these aspects of integrity: personal responsibility, respect for self and others, honesty and self control.  In addition, your son/daughter will be introduced to a variety of lifetime sport activities designed to broaden their understanding and ultimately aid them in their personal lifetime fitness goals.  Because you, as parents, are an invaluable asset in our program, please review the following information with your son/daughter to assure their success this school year.

1. Students are responsible to wear a Dallastown gym uniform and sneakers each class.

The gym uniform may be purchased in the school store, located in room 306 beginning   September 8.  The school store will be open Monday, Wednesday and Friday before and after school.  The cost of the uniform is as follows, short sleeve shirt - $7.00, long sleeve shirt - $10.00, cotton shorts - $8.00, mesh shorts - $12.00, and sweat pants -  $18.00.  (All items are from the high quality, Russell label.)

Gym suits will also be available in the front lobby of the high school on September 3 and 5 beginning at 7 a.m..  If a student wishes to purchase a gym suit at this time, please make checks payable to ACE.

Sweatpants and sweatshirts are highly recommended during the fall and spring marking periods. Students must take personal responsibility to bring them to class, as outside activities are imminent.  In order to aid both students and physical education staff, any sweatshirt which is navy or grey may be worn IN PLACE OF, OR IN ADDITION TO the SCHOOL APPROVED GYM SHIRT OR SHORTS.   No other sweatshirts or sweatpants of other colors will be accepted.  Please note, it is entirely up to the student to determine if they need a sweatshirt or sweatpants. Students may always wear only the original gym uniform, and not replace it with a sweatshirt or sweatpants. However, no other apparel may be worn in place of, or over the gym suit for warmth.

2. Security

All students are provided a lock and locker at the beginning of the school year.  It is the responsibility of each student to secure all clothing and valuables at all times, including during their physical education class.  Students may, at any time prior to their physical education class, further secure their valuables by requesting their instructor lock them in the office during class.

3. Grading

Due to our constant update of grades, all students begin the marking period with 100 points.  Students and parents may monitor grades, based on the following system:

No gym shirt/shorts/shoes – loss of 5 points for each, (max. 10 per class)

Absence (school trip or illness) – loss of 5 points

Note:  All students will be permitted to miss one class per marking period due to a school function without a loss of class points.

ALL CLASSES MAY BE MADE UP IN STUDY HALLS (providing there is a PE class in session) OR MONDAY AFTER SCHOOL FOR THE AWARDING OF POINTS LOST DUE TO ABSENCES or demerits. (FIVE POINTS WILL BE AWARDED  PER MAKE UP.)

Lack of participation in class – loss of 5 points

Misuse of equipment/not following directions – loss of 5 points

Outstanding grade – 90 - 100 points

Satisfactory grade – 55 points minimum

Unsatisfactory grade –50 points or below

Three points are needed to pass the year in physical education class.  An S has a value of one point, an O, two points.  Those desiring an O for a yearly average must accumulate seven points during the four marking periods.

4. Physical Education Detention

This detention is non-negotiable.  Each student accumulating 40 points will be required to complete two 43 minute periods of activity with a physical education instructor which will nullify a total of 10 demerits.  If a student misses or does not participate in the assigned detention, it is the responsibility of the student to meet with their instructor to reschedule the detention.  If they miss a second detention, a call will be made home to verify the problem.  Detention will again be scheduled, if they miss a third, they will be assigned to ISS (Internal Suspension) where they will be assigned a written assignment which will nullify 5 points.

5. Doctor/Parental Notes for excuse from class.

(Note: A note will count as an absence.)

a. Two parental notes to be excused from physical education class are allowed per marking period. (Note: any non-participation will deduct 5 points, which may be made up in study hall.)

b. If a student needs to be excused more than twice due to an illness or injury, please secure a note from the doctor specifically for this purpose.  This note is then given to the high school nurse,   NOT TO THE ATTENDANCE OFFICE.

6.  Swearing is unacceptable and will not be allowed.   All students are asked to demonstrate respect of others and self control at all times.

7.  Misuse of equipment is not tolerated. Replacement cost will be assessed to students if misuse is detected.

8.  Due to safety, gum chewing is not acceptable.  Jewelry which may interfere with your son/daughter’s or others personal safety is also not acceptable. (This is at the discretion of their instructor, students may check with their instructor prior to class.)

We look forward to a successful and productive year with your son/daughter.  If you have any questions, please contact member of the Dallastown High School Physical Education staff at 244-4021.
